Study shows more sleep means more sex - Times Gazette

We all want to have a better sex life and the good researchers from the University of Michigan Sleep and Circadian Research Laboratory added another item in our to-do list to get that. Just like exercise, it’s another “cure-in-our-face” that can actually help us fight stress and be happier in the longer run.



The study was participated by 171 females picked from the university. They were asked to fill up an online survey that contains questions about their sleeping patterns like duration and quality of sleep. The questionnaire also asked about their level of arousal and if they had any sexual activities from the last 24 hours.



Simply put, the results showed that women who slept even for an hour longer than their usual reported stronger sexual desire and actually have a sure 14% probability that they would engage sexually again the next day.



David Kalmbach, paper’s lead author stated that, “Our study showed that good sleep is important for healthy sexual desire and arousal in women, even when women are mentally and medically healthy.”



Increase in vaginal lubricant were also reported by women who sleep longer while they’re having sex compared with women who had lesser hours of sleep.



Both effects are present even after considering factors like age, tiredness, feelings (sadness and happiness).



“I think these findings suggest that taking a closer look at sleep health in women with sexual complaints is a worthwhile endeavor … as poor sleep may lead to sexual problems”, Mr. Kalmbach added.



Kalmbach also explain that hormones may play a big role in affecting our sexual response, previous studies hypothesized that sleep can, in fact, affect these levels. However, more research is needed to confidently identify underlying mechanisms.
