Tariq Aziz, voice of Saddam, dies in Iraqi prison - The Times (subscription)

Tariq Aziz, the debonair foreign minister during Saddam Hussein’s rule who became a familiar figure to western television audiences during two Gulf wars, has died in an Iraqi prison.

Aziz, an elegant figure in dark-rimmed glasses who spoke fluent English and was the smooth public face of the regime, was reported to have died of a heart attack. He was 79.

“Tariq Aziz arrived at al-Nasiriya Educational hospital suffering from a severe heart attack. He had heart complications that led to his death at 3pm,” said Saadi al-Majid, head of the health department of Dhi Qar governate where Aziz was
