Does exercising 5 times a day for 10 minutes have the same effect as working out for 50 minutes straight?

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I want to ask about something I heard on TV. The people on some news show did a segment about how exercise is cumulative and therefore one does not have to exercise for an hour straight, or 30, 45 minutes straight, for their daily workout.

They said that since exercise is cumulative, a person can glean about the same type of results in doing small exercise spurts, several times throughout the day, as they could if they exercise for that same period of time straight through.

I know that any amount of exercise helps. But I'm wondering, if 2 people start out at (pretty much) the same fitness level and start on these exercise programs, at the end of say, a year, will the one who has been doing exercise at intervals throughout the day be as fit as the person who has been exercising once a day, all at one time?
