Does melatonin really help a person sleep better?

I was never a believer in products like melatonin. I did a little internet researcher on the subject, I came to the conclusion that the positive effects of melatonin were probably from the placebo effect. This past summer I changed my mind after I went on a trip to Germany. I took a bottle of melatonin with me completely doubting that the pills would be helpful. After taking them, however, I slept better than I usually do at home. I didn't have jet lag at all. I felt like the supplement actually helped me.

Though I am still kind of a skeptic on the issue, I'm open for convincing. One person's experience, even if it is my own, does not prove that melatonin helps at all. That's why I ask everyone here these two questions.

Have you taken melatonin as a sleep aid? Did melatonin help you get a better night's sleep?
