Bystander Syndrome

I have seen altercations happen in public, and I have stepped in one or twice. I don't always step in, but where I feel I can help, I will and do step in. But I have noticed that I am the only one racing forward to help at times, and that up until that point, people surrounding the altercation will look the other way and pretend that they are not privy to what is going on.

Sometimes it is men hitting women, or a man blatantly ragging a woman about trying to steal something from her. Other people have helped before too, but it has been very rare that that has happened.

So basically, you better be trained in some sort of Mixed martial Arts, such as krav maga, because if anything happens to you in public NOBODY is likely going to help you, even if they believe that the attack on you is wrong and should not be happening.

Why do you think that people are so reluctant to jump in and help these days? Do you think they are scared of getting hurt? What is the reason? Or do you think that it is a combination of these things along with the bystander effect, where everyone that is privy to the effect will stand around expecting someone else to step forward and help, and so no help ever gets offered?
