Working out on an empty stomach?

I work out very early (5:00 am). I usually try to have something small to eat before I go, but that's not always possible. I feel like I do better with something in my stomach. I was reading a thread on fat burning (and granted the author was not someone I know and therefor, I took this with a grain of salt) and the guy mentioned burning fat by working out on an empty stomach. He said you deplete your carb stores faster and burn more fat. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this and if anyone else that works out early eats beforehand or goes hungry?
