Recovering from Injury

I did not see anything anywhere that relates to injuries, so I am posting it here.

I am interested in ankle strengthening exercises. I am recovering from ankle surgery to repair a torn tendon.

I had a severe tendon tear in July 2012 but it was not discovered until early December 2012 (doc kept saying nothing showed on the X-ray). I had to have surgery to repair it and the surgeon - who specialized in ankles - said it was one of the worst he had seen. He also said he had never seen an ankle that was so unstable that was still being used (I was still walking on it).

It was so bad that when I walked the bone was coming out of the joint. I am autistic and often don't feel pain (NOT a good thing) so I did not realize just how bad it was. I only had flashes of pain occasionally and it would make me sick to my stomach. He said there was NOTHING holding my ankle together.

I had the surgery in February but lost my health insurance and cannot do physical therapy. Any advice is welcome. I am still in a brace and it still swells (of course) but I need to improve strength and flexibility.
