The World Health Organization (WHO) report stating that Peshawar, the capital city of Pakistans Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is the epicenter of endemic poliovirus in the world is very alarming. It is so sad to know that at a time when this virus has been eradicated from almost all across the world, Pakistan remains in the group of three countries still fighting this menace. The other two countries are Afghanistan and Nigeria.
The main hurdle in the fight against this virus is the regressive ideology of the Taleban who hold sway over parts of this province. Their ideological supporters are busy spreading lies about polio vaccines due to which people are afraid and refuse to administer the vaccine to their children. Attacks on health workers taking part in vaccination drives have become norm of the day.
I believe the federal and provincial governments must take strict action in this regard and launch the anti-polio campaign on war-footings. Masood Khan, Jubail
