Md. Mall Gunman Was Avid Skater, No Criminal Past

COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) — The mall in suburban Baltimore was humming with weekend shoppers when the shotgun blasts rang out on the upper level. Panicked patrons ducked into stores and inventory rooms.

Within minutes, police say officers arrived at the Mall in Columbia and discovered three people dead, including the gunman. Police say the gunman with had shot a man and a woman, both in their 20s, who worked at a skateboard shop, then killed himself.

Police Chief Edward J. McMahon said police had tentatively identified the gunman hours later, but were still seeking a motive.

A news release Saturday night said police also subsequently found and disabled "two crude devices that appeared to be an attempt at making explosives using fireworks."

The mall was to remain closed Sunday.
