Annual Flu Vaccination Reduces Children Hospitalization By 74% - The Almagest

28Mar

US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday the flu vaccines have reduced children hospitalization by 74 percent. The study is published in the Infectious Diseases journal.

The center added this is the first of its type estimation for vaccine effectiveness against flu-related intensive care hospitalization.

Medical officer of the influenza division at CDC, Alicia Fry, said in a released statement the results of their latest study underscore annual flu vaccination importance that keeps children away from ICUs.

She added that the vaccination is very important for all the children, and especially those who are at high risk of the disease as it protects from the life-threatening illness.

CDC said the vaccine is extremely important for children below the age of five years and also to those who have certain chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma or development delays. The flu complication increases for them.

The research team studied medical records of more than 200 children between the age group of 6 and 17 years who were hospitalized to pediatric intensive care units during the flu seasons of 2010-11 and 2011-12 in the US.

Fry and her team found the vaccination reduced hospitalization by about 74 percent.

Researchers conclude the flu vaccination may not always be able to prevent the flu illness, but it helps in protecting against more serious outcomes

The present recommendation of CDC is annual vaccination to children six months and older, and for those who are at high risk of such related complications..
