A patient was being evaluated for a possible Ebola infection Monday night at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, authorities said.

The state health department said the initial evaluation suggested a diagnosis “other than Ebola infection.”

According to the health department, the patient identified a symptom that caused concern and called for assistance. The department arranged for safe transport to the medical center, where the patient was being evaluated in an isolation room.

As part of the evaluation, the state’s public health laboratory was conducting an Ebola test, and an update was expected by Tuesday morning, the health department said.

So far, only one person with a confirmed Ebola infection has been treated in the Washington region. Nina Pham, a nurse who contracted the infection while caring for an Ebola patient in Dallas, was successfully treated at a special unit in the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. She left the facility on Friday.
