Southwest grounds planes, cancels flights over error - Columbus Dispatch

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines said last night it has grounded 128 planes after failing to inspectbackup hydraulic systems used to control the rudder if the main system fails.

Southwest said it has canceled 90 flights so far; the effect on flights at Port Columbus, whereSouthwest is the market-share leader, was not known last night. The grounding covers aboutone-fifth of Southwest’s fleet.

The airline said that after discovering the inspections had been skipped, it immediatelynotified federal safety regulators and began checking the planes.
