Government Reduces Fluoride Recommendation - WLOS

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The government has decided for the first time in more than 50 years to lower the recommended amount of fluoride in drinking water.Too much fluoride has been found to lead to white splotches on teeth.

“A tiny bit of fluorosis probably doesn't look good but probably makes your teeth stronger, but if it goes over the top, your teeth get chalky,” said Dr. Robert Powell of Asheville Dental Care.

Since 1962, the recommended amount of fluoride in drinking water ranged from .7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter of water.

The new recommendation calls for no more than .7 milligrams per liter of water.

“I think some people are getting a little too much fluoride, so this is probably a good move to reduce fluorosis, but you still need that fluoride in the water so that these kids don't end up with more cavities,” said Powell.

Not everyone agrees with him.

In 2013, the city of Brevard voted unanimously to not reintroduce fluoride into the city’s water supply.

The city of Franklin also does not add fluoride to its water.

Asheville does add fluoride into its water, but according to a January sampling of water, the amount of fluoride.

“Having fluoride in the water is extremely important to combat all these other things that are making people really have more decay than they did for a long time,” said Powell.
