Plucking hair could be a solution to baldness - Uncover California

Male pattern baldness is a major issue for men as about 50% of them face this problem by age 50. This could have a solution, but it may be a little painful. Researchers have conducted studies on mice and have noticed hair regrowth after triggering an immune system response.

Researchers at the University of Southern California found that plucking 200 hair in a particular pattern and density can stimulate growth of up to 1,200 replacement hairs in mice.

According to Cheng-Ming Chuong, first author of the study, "It is a good example of how basic research can lead to a work with potential translational value. The work leads to potential new targets for treating alopecia, a form of hair loss".

It was found by researchers that regenerative process depends on the principle of 'quorum sensing' that tells about a system's response to stimuli that have an effect on some members. Here, quorum sensing affects how the hair follicle system responds to the plucking of some hairs.

Using molecular analyses, the team showed that these plucked follicles signal could trigger hair regrowth by releasing inflammatory proteins. The immune cells rush to the site of the injury and hair regrowth process starts.

The research team found that these immune cells produce signaling molecules like tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a), triggering hair-growth.
