$20 Million Going to Police Body Cameras Across Country - WSAZ-TV

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- In the wake of riots over police violence in Baltimore, the Justice Department was moving ahead Friday to get more body cameras to police departments around the country.

It's a $20 million pilot program to get those cameras for America's 750,000 cops. The cameras document police interaction with any suspect.

Several local departments have already adopted body cameras.

The Kenova Police Department has been using body cameras several months.

Chief Ray Mossman says they've already been used to clear up an accusation.

"It was really bad verbiage she said he used," he said.

Mossman says a woman claimed during a traffic stop, an officer used inappropriate language.

They pulled up that officer's body camera footage and determined she was lying.

"She'd gotten some tickets, and she was trying to get out of those tickets by making up a story," Mossman said.

He believes knowing actions are being recorded encourages better decision making on both sides.

"As long as we're doing our jobs correctly we have nothing to hide," he said.

WSAZ also talked with a spokesman with the Ashland Police Department.

They've experimented with body cameras as well. However, they say they're reluctant to adopt them until the legislature clears up privacy regulations.
