Tattoos could cause skin problems - NYC Today

According to a new study, 1 in every 10 people who have tattoos suffer from skin problems after they get themselves inked. It could lead to skin problems such as redness and inflammation, infection and swelling. According to researchers, these complications are likely to remain for many years after getting the tattoo.

According to Live Science, the co-author of the study and New York dermatologist, Marie Leger said that she saw many people who come into her clinic reporting problems associated with tattoos. She started thinking regarding rampant tattoo ink problems and realised that many other issues were linked to tattoos, after she had discussions with colleagues and friends.

Leger and her team randomly selected 300 people from New York's Central Park who had tattoos in an attempt to understand the issues surrounding tattoos. After that they asked 149 men and 151 women regarding their tattoos and any reactions after getting tattoo that are not normally related to the healing process.

It was also found in the research that people who experience tattoo complications usually do not receive medical treatment. Leger said that there are prescription steroid preparations that can assist in dealing with rashes.

According to the study co-author Dr. Marie Leger a dermatologist and assistant professor at the New York University, "I've taken care of patients who have had problems with their tattoos and was curious about how common this was. I was surprised at the results".

Leger added that the reactions could be quite remarkable. Leger said that the colored portion can occasionally develop as much as a centimeter above the skin and can have an effect on the texture of the skin and the appearance of tattoo.
