Report: Defendant Shot at Court While Attacking Witness - Boston.com

The new United States Federal Courthouse in Salt Lake City.Credit: AP A US Marshal shot a defendant in a Utah courtroom Monday after that defendant attacked a witness, according to multiple media reports.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the US Attorney’s Office said the case that was happening at the time was gang related.

According to the Tribune, an FBI official said the defendant attacked the witness with a writing utensil, which prompted the US Marshal to shoot the man multiple times in the chest.

The defendant was carried out of the courthouse on a stretcher. The witness was not injured.

The incident happened during what was to be the last in a series of trials of alleged members of the Crips, according to the Daily News.

The shooting happened during the racketeering trial of Siale Angilau, an alleged member of the Tongan Crip gang, USA Today reported.

The new federal courthouse, which opened last week, immediately went into lockdown.
