Randy Howard, a country singer who had performed alongside big-time stars like Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Jr., has died after he was shot by a bounty hunter attempting to detain him for skipping a court appearance, according to police.
Howard, 65, was at his Lynchburg, Tenn., home on Tuesday night when bounty hunter Jackie Shell tried to take him into custody. Josh DeVine, a spokesman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation told the Times Free Press in an email on Thursday that Howard opened fired on the bounty hunter, who shot back and killed the singer.
Shell, a former sheriff's investigator who was working for the firm A Plus Bail Bonding, was also injured during the shootout, reports NBC News.
According to DeVine, Shell was trying to detain Howard on an arrest warrant charging him with fourth-offense DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and driving on a revoked license.
Taste Of Country reports that Howard was part of the "Outlaw Country" movement and was best known for his song "All-American Redneck."
