Mr Alvarenga made landfall in Majuro on Monday, saying he had drifted around 6,500 miles (10,500km) across the Pacific from Mexico after being blown off course by bad weather.

Hendy Enos, an emergency nurse at the Majuro Hospital, recounted seeing Mr Alvarenga after he was admitted to Majuro Hospital, saying he looked dehydrated and weak.

At a news conference, Diego Dalton, Minister Counsellor of the El Salvador Embassy based in Tokyo said Mr Alvarenga still had no travel plans.

"Mr. Alvarenga's health is still very frail and upon this condition, we kindly request to the media to respect his dignity," said Mr Dalton, who spoke at the Marshall Islands Resort Hotel where Mr Alvarenga is staying

"At this moment, there are no travel plans or definite itinerary. His return will depend on when his health allows (for) the long journey back," said Mr Dalton, who travelled to the Marshall Islands from Tokyo after it was reported Mr Alvarenga was a citizen of El Salvador.
