Lauderdale County, Miss. Relay for Life holds a special significance to many across this area and the country. Sunday afternoon, a reception honored cancer survivors at The Hamasa Shriners Building in Marion.
30 years, that's how long Relay for Life has been raising money with the goal of eradicating cancer for good. To honor those who have fought that battle that affects millions every year, The Lauderdale County Relay for Life Chapter hosted a survivors reception.
"Just walking around and speaking to them, It lets me know that it's more important than ever because they feel honored that we would take to the time to honor them as a survivor," 2015 Relay for Life Lauderdale County Survivor Chairperson Cathy Raley said.
During the reception, the two honorary chairs told their story and how much Relay for Life means to them and the countless others that cancer effects.
"When you look at some of the people that have survived this disease, they have usually done it through their faith, their doctors, and their caregivers," Honorary Co-chair Jamie Kelly said. "It's just such a huge uplifting event to see all of the people that have survived."
"It's truly an honor to be represented as a co-chair for Relay for Life against those of us that are battling cancer," Honorary Co-chair Renetta Harris stated.
To celebrate the 30 years of Relay for Life, this year's theme was revealed as 30 Years Rockin' Relay. Organizers want the next 30 years to be even better for cancer research.
"The strives, where we have come from 30 years is amazing where cancer research has come," Raley said.
It's the next three decades that survivors Kelly and Harris are hoping will bring a cure to a devestating disease.
"I hope in 30 years we don't have to have relay because they've come up with a cure for cancer," said Kelly. "If this does not happen I can only see this growing and getting bigger and our community coming together as one."
"I hope in the next 30 years we will find a cure for cancer, that the cure will be found in 30 years and we won't have to do so much relay," Harris said.
Lauderdale County's Relay for Life will be held at the Lauderdale County Ag. Center in April. That date is Friday, April, 24, from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. If you would like more information you can call 601-479-8452.
