HASTINGS, Neb. -- Hundreds of Hastings residents joined together on Saturday to light luminarias, write memories of loved ones and walk laps around the Hastings High School gymnasium in the fight against cancer.
For Tyler and Sarah Hermann, it was the second aisle they walked down today.
"We just got married!" Tyler Hermann said. "And we're here in honor of Sarah's dad who died from cancer three years ago. And my aunt also passed away two years ago. They couldn't be here today so we came to be with them."
They make a point to walk in Relay for Life every year since losing a father and aunt, both to lung cancer.
So this year when event organizers changed the event date at the last minute to the Hermann's wedding day, they knew they had to come out and walk some laps.
"It feels like we're completing everything. We're helping honor those people who couldn't be with us today," Sarah said. "My dad would definitely laugh at me!"
Event organizers say the annual Relay for Life is one of the most successful ways the American Cancer Society raises funds for research and to provide local services to cancer survivors.
Tyler lost his aunt to lung cancer two years ago, one day before Relay for Life. That's why his uncle says that's one reason why the event and the day are so special to their family.
"Wedding, close to the anniversary and life's got to go on. Everybody's got to keep working for the one thing and that's to eliminate cancer," Russell Hermann said.
