A simple necessity made possible rare thing in the world of transplant. Doctors in San Francisco, California made possible nine-way kidney transplant, which otherwise would have been a work of a study and such thing that is built out of medical testing.
The transplantation took place in the University of California San Francisco Medical Center and California Pacific Medical Center.
Dr. Robert Osorio said there were no complications in the transplantation and as the patients recovers the success is to continue.
Osorio is the director of transplantation at California Pacific Medical Center. He said the transplant was clear mathematics as donors could not be found so backdoor donating was used to make the rare nine-way transplant successful.
“He’s doing a wonderful thing. I think he felt the need to show gratitude in some way and this is how he’s doing it and he’s helping multiple people now,” transplant surgeon Dr. Andrew Posselt told ABC 7.
The first and foremost reason to call the transplant as incredible is that it came together organically.
Report says the original couple were not compatible and in the transplant list a woman was found. Another couple was found undergoing similar situation in another hospital and they decided to give up their kidneys. In this way the list grew and nine transplants took place in a chain.
The transplant is like learning experience as this is a real life test sample without any prior laboratory experiment. It would help doctors to understand how successful transplants can take place.
Posselt concluded by saying that anyone could do what this man did and help save a significant amount of lives. “A healthy person giving one kidney up is not going to hurt their health and it’s not going to shorten their lifespan. It’s a very safe thing.”
