What would you consider to be the simplest ways to carb-load?

Some athletes usually use carb-loading before a big event so as to increase their performance. According to you, what would be the simplest and most straightforward way to carb-loading and in which events is carb-loading beneficial? Can you engage in carb-loading if you are not an athlete?
