Do you prepare light foods or you just eat less of the things you like in order to lose weight?

I'm very interested to get the answer to this question; the ideal thing would be to get a lot different answers :) I lost a lot weight 2 years ago by cooking and eating ''light meals'', and walking a couple of times a week! I recently gained some weight back, and I'm now eating meals that are not exactly light, but I'm not eating a lot of it! I'm not being very lucky, but I'm not sure if it could be because of this or maybe something is wrong with my metabolism.
