White and Gold, or Black and Blue? Dress Debate Rages on Twitter - Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) -- A 50-pound ($77) dress sold by British clothing retailer Roman Originals Ltd. has divided the Internet and caused an unlikely online debate that’s drawn in the likes of reality TV star Kim Kardashian and singer Taylor Swift.

The colors of the Birmingham, England-based company’s “Lace Detail Bodycon Dress” have taken over social media feeds in recent days, with #TheDress becoming a No. 1 trending topic on Twitter.com. At the center of the debate: is it black and blue, or white and gold?

“What color is that dress? I see white & gold. Kanye sees black & blue, who is color blind?,” Kardashian, the wife of rap singer Kanye West, wrote on Twitter.

“What’s the matter with u guys, it’s white and gold,” Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore said in a reply to a tweet. Actor Jaden Smith and actress Anna Kendrick were among other celebrities that weighed in.

In Roman Originals’ online shop, the dress is described as being available in four different colors: ivory, scarlet, pink and royal-blue. The retailer, which sells its products online and through 150 outlets across the U.K., declined to comment.

“I don’t understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it’s a trick somehow,” Taylor Swift posted on Twitter. “I’m confused and scared. PS it’s OBVIOUSLY BLUE AND BLACK.”
