DHAKA, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Six bodies have been recovered after a ferry carrying some 150 passengers sank on Sunday in the middle of a river in northwestern Bangladesh, police said.
The ferry capsized in Padma river in Manikganj district, some 63 km northwest of capital Dhaka, at around 12:00 p.m. local time Sunday after it was hit by a goods laden cargo tanker, Rakibuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Shibaloy Police Station in Manikganj, told Xinhua from the site.
He said a search operation is under way, and a rescue vessel has been called in to boost local efforts to salvage the ferry.
Many passengers were able to swim ashore after the accident, said the official, but he could not tell the number of the missing passengers.
The ferry services in Bangladesh never maintain lists of passengers and no one is able to tell exactly how many passengers a ferry carries.
Ferry and boat disasters are common in the country, which is crisscrossed by about 250 rivers. Ferry is still a key means of transport and most of them are often overcrowded.
Seven bodies were recovered after a ferry carrying some 150 passengers sank last week at the confluence of a river after it struck a submerged island in southern Barguna district, some 300 km away from capital Dhaka.
