Breast Cancer Touches The Lincoln Community - 1011now

LINCOLN, Neb. Five thousand people gathered at Holmes Lake on Sunday afternoon but it wasn't just to enjoy the beautiful weather.

But to go for a walk for someone they love.

Thirty three people from Grand Lodge came together to walk as a team at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event.

A group effort for some of their own.

Lisa Henning helped organize all of her co-workers and make t-shirts for the event.

"We've got a lot of cancer. My sister's a three year breast cancer survivor. She's not here today walking so I'm here for her and I'm walking for her and my aunt I lost thirty years ago and Vicki," said Henning.

The event has become more than a fundraiser: it is a movement.

Thousands at Holmes Lake had their own stories of how breast cancer has touched their lives each one different.

Kori Lentell is fighting breast cancer. She said, "Obviously I'm going through cancer treatments. I finished my last round of chemo two weeks ago. I'm walking for myself and for my mother...everyone else that is a survivor and going through cancer right now," said Lentell.

Staci Strange says as a breast cancer survivor the day has a special meaning because she's already lost family to the disease. "It means everything. My mom and grandma died from it 21 years ago today," said Strange.

And people's stories were filled with powerful emotions, pushing them to be there every year.

Rachel Manning's mom was diagnosed in 2012 with cancer and she also knows firsthand how the disease changes lives. "There are so many people here because there are so many people who've been affected by it who've been touched by it."

Sue Kittinger said, "Inspiring. These warriors in pink. Truly inspire me with everything they do."

Organizers estimate they raised $250,000 to help in the fight against breast cancer

10/11 Cares was a media sponsor of the event and it was Abby Turpin who co-emceed.
