An in-flight squabble over legroom led to a flight to be diverted—marking the 1/3 time this week that unruly passengers pressured unplanned airplane landings.
An American Airways flight headed from Miami to Paris stopped brief in Boston on Wednesday night time after Frenchman Edmund Alexandre’s calls for for extra space weren’t met.
The 60-12 months-previous from Paris it appears informed the passenger in entrance of him that her reclined seat used to be hurting his legs, WCVB reports.
But the woman apparently refused to budge.The disagreement turned into a row, and a flight attendant attempted to intervene. The man allegedly followed the crew member down the aisle and grabbed his arm, according to a federal affidavit.
That’s when air marshals on board the Flight 62 broke their cover to subdue the man. Massachusetts state police greeted Alexandre at a Boston airport at around 10 p.m. He was taken to a Boston hospital for a pre-existing medical condition. He was later slapped with local and federal charges for interfering with a flight crew. Alexandre was released on his own recognizance until a December hearing.
The man’s defense attorney called it an overreaction by law enforcement. The father of five was apparently returning home after visiting family in Haiti.
Other passengers on Flight 62 continued on to Paris Wednesday night.
Earlier this week, another dispute over legroom caused a United Airlines flight from Newark to Denver to stop in Chicago. The argument started after a male passenger attempted to use a Knee Defender, a cheap and portable gadget that prevents the seat in front of him from reclining. A female passenger then stood up, turned around and threw a cup of water at the male. The two involved in the argument were confronted by Chicago police and TSA officers and not allowed to continue to Denver.
Both passengers had paid extra to sit in United’s Economy Plus section, the part of the plane that has four more inches of legroom than the rest of coach.
On Thursday, two Canadian women on a Sunwing flight to Cuba forced their plane to return to Toronto with a military jet escort. The women had apparently drank duty-free alcohol in the flight’s bathroom and triggered a fire alarm by lighting up cigarettes. They were charged with smoking on an airplane and endangering its safety after getting into a physical fight.
