Last year I finished a year-and-a-half, 3,200 mile walk across the country. I slept in the woods and carried a 75-lb. pack on my back. I never exhausted myself...took short hops and short rests all day long. When I came to a restaurant, I was grateful for the calorie information on the menu: I got as many calories and as much fat as I could because I needed every bit of it. My weight stayed steady - but I lost all belly fat and added about 12 lbs. of muscle bulk to my legs. The leg muscle bulk has remained. It made me think that steady exercise is the most important thing. The foods I ate were plain and fatty, yet I got into absolutely terrific shape. It makes me wonder about fancy diets as a substitute for substantial exercise. Keep active and diet will largely take care of itself.
