Question: Should I lift weights if i'm trying to lose weight?

Why did your doctor say you should lose weight if you are at 15% body fat? You are leaving something out... At 5'10", 280 is a bit on the heavy side, no matter how muscular you are. I believe that there is more than 15% body fat that you are not wanting to disclose.

That being said, if you just do cardio, you will lose weight - but that weight will be mostly muscle over a couple months.

So do not just stop working out - simply cut back on the extreme heavy weights and go for a balance - do a bodybuilding routine rather than a strength routine...

If you have a heart problem, then you need to see a cardiologist before changing your workouts to include a lot of cardio...you could be putting yourself at risk...

Just be safe. You may want to start a swimming regimen - nothing hardcore - just something to use all of your muscles, but allows for periods of rest when you need it.
