Preventing, then curing the day after New Year's Eve hangover - Communities Digital News

CHICAGO, December 31, 2014 — New Year’s Eve is fast approaching. Now is the time to make your pre-New Year’s resolution, the one where you swear you are not going to wake up New Year’s Day with a hangover.

Of course, the best way to accomplish hangover-avoidance is to avoid overindulgence. But we’re skipping right over that because it’s no fun. We’ve all been good this year, or mostly good, so we should be able to celebrate.

The next best way to avoid the throbbing head and spinning stomach requires a bit of discipline, but that’s kind of what resolutions are about anyway, right? That’s also why so many of them don’t work. Resolutions require discipline, discipline requires resolve, so the first step is to decide how badly you really want to avoid that hangover.

Are you really going to have to function on January 1? Then start by eating. Yeah, this is the easy part. Fats and carbs will slow alcohol absorption, prevent low blood sugar and help steady your stomach.

Alcohol really does hit you harder if it hits an empty stomach first, so chow down before you bottoms-up.

Now comes the discipline. Hangovers are all about hydration. Every woman on the planet, or at least in this writer’s circle, has wondered why it seems like so much more liquid is coming out in the bathroom than went after a round at the bar.

Men may wonder, too, but they don’t talk about it as much.

The reason that the 12 ounces that went in seems like 20 coming out is that it is. The numbers are off, but the point is that even though you are taking liquid into your body, rather than replenishing you, alcohol does the opposite.

Think of it this way: the alcohol really, really wants to stay with you, so it latches onto the water molecules your body holds so dear, but the current is too strong and they both get swept away, and more liquid leaves than entered.

If only we could find a way to make this work with fat cells. I think a few people have done it with brain cells, but that’s ok. They go into politics.

To avoid the dehydration and resulting hangover, alternate every alcoholic beverage with a glass of water.

Afraid of looking un-cool? Put the water in the same glass, or bottle, or even can.

Or better yet, don’t worry about looking cool. The people around you are either doing the same thing and are, therefore, impressed with your intelligence, or they are not, in which case, they probably won’t be noticing much of anything soon.

Truly, if anyone notices you’re alternating water and alcohol, they really need to focus a little less on your beverage and a little more on the party around them. This, of course, assumes it’s not your mother. She can do both. And she will.

Alcohol. Water. Alcohol. Water. It’s not hard, but it takes some thought. And eventually, thinking may be a bit difficult. So what do you do if the resolve wanes and the discipline falters, leaving you bushy-eyed and bright-tailed in the morning instead of the other way around?

Time heals all hangovers. As long as you skip that whole “hair-of-the-dog” thing. It’s not withdrawal, people; it’s dehydration.

So hydrate! Water works, but only if your stomach agrees. Better options include the ever-popular Gatorade (electrolytes are key), ginger ale (flat, if the bubbles would work against you), Pedialyte (some swear by it, but somehow it just seems inappropriate) and the trendy coconut water which has recently found its way to grocery shelves across the country. Not coconut milk, mind you. Coconut water is the liquid found inside unripened coconuts and it’s full of nutrients and potassium.

Now that we’re talking about nutrients, and we’ve established that the stomach is being cooperative, let’s have breakfast!

We know that with time the toxins will work their way out of our system and we’ll be, for better or worse, back to our old selves again. But is there anything we can do to speed the process along? Bananas, fruit juice, and (easy there, tummy…) eggs.

Bananas, like coconut water, are full of potassium, which your brain and muscles need to function properly, or at least to the best of their ability. Bananas will help clear your fuzzy head and ease the aches.

Fruit juice provides vitamins and fructose, which is the sugar that naturally forms in fruit. It helps your body clear out the toxins and will give you an energy boost.

Stay away from juice with added sugar, though. You got more than enough empty calories last night, don’t you think?

And now, there they are. Warm, slimy, looking back at you if they’re sunny-side up. Why eggs? Because eggs contain cysteine, which your body needs to break down alcohol. Have some toast with them if it’ll help them go down easier.

So you’re hydrated, fed and still feeling like crap? If you decide to pop a pill to go with last night’s alcohol, stay away from acetaminophen. Acetaminophen, the pain-killing ingredient in Tylenol and many others, is very hard on your liver.

The alcohol is already doing a number on your liver. You only have one liver, and you need it. Stick with plain, old aspirin. Aspirin inhibits prostaglandin, which contributes to hangovers. Best to take it before bed, actually, but let’s just be glad we actually made it to bed.

And to the New Year! Yes, we made it. We may feel like we had to scratch and claw our way through the old one, but there’s another one here to greet us as soon as we can fully open our eyes.

May it bring you much joy!

Children with Autism Who Live With Pets Are More Assertive - Full-Time Whistle

A recent study has found that pets play an important role in improving the social skills of children with autism as well as making them more assertive. The study found that children with autism have stronger social skills when any kind of pet lived in the home. Gretchen Carlisle, research fellow at the University of Missouri in the US said, “Kids with autism do not always readily engage with others, but if there is a pet in the home that the child bonds with and a visitor starts asking about the pet, the child may be more likely to respond.”

Pets often serve as “social lubricants”, Carlisle said. As per the study, when pets are present in social settings or a classroom, children talk and engage more with one another. Carlsile mentioned that this effect also seems to apply to children with autism and could account for their increased assertiveness when the children are living in a home with pets.

Dogs and other pets play an important role in individuals’ social lives, and they can act as catalysts for social interaction. The researchers found it based on the survey conducted in 70 families who had children with autism between the ages of 8 and 18.

“When I compared the social skills of children with autism who lived with dogs to those who did not, the children with dogs appeared to have greater social skills,” Carlisle added.

“More significantly, the data revealed that children with any kind of pet in the home reported being more likely to engage in behaviour such as introducing themselves, asking for information or responding to other people’s questions,” said Carlisle.

He added, “Kids with autism don’t always readily engage with others, but if there’s a pet in the home that the child is bonded with and a visitor starts asking about the pet, the child may be more likely to respond.” He has also said that while dogs are good for some kids with autism, it might not be the best option for every child.

UPDATE 2-Liberia suspends Ebola curfew to allow New Year's Eve worship - Reuters

* MSF warns of growing complacency in Liberia

* Epidemic has killed more than 3,400 in country

* Liberia suspends activities of traditional groups (Adds Liberia suspends activities of traditional societies)

By James Harding Giahyue

MONROVIA, Dec 31 (Reuters) - Liberia lifted a curfew imposed to curb the spread of Ebola so that people could attend New Year's Eve church services on Wednesday, as an aid group warned of growing complacency over the disease in the country.

The United Nations' health agency did not comment directly on the one-night suspension but called for authorities to keep up "social distancing" measures and encourage people to avoid large gatherings.

Liberia introduced the curfew in September at the height of an epidemic that has killed more than 3,400 people inside its borders and at least 4,400 more in Sierra Leone and Guinea, according to figures from the U.N.'s World Health Organization.

The virus, which causes vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding, is spread by contact with the bodily fluids. It has no known cure.

"The President has directed the Minister of Justice to suspend the curfew for today, Dec. 31, to allow religious leaders, churches and other religious groups to allow the watch night services, traditional in Liberian society," Deputy Information Minister Isaac Jackson said.

Churches that hold services should observe measures to prevent the spread of Ebola such as hand washing, temperature testing and avoiding over-crowding on church benches, he added.

The midnight to 6 a.m. (0000-0600 GMT) curfew would be reimposed the following night, and anyone caught outside would be arrested, he said.

In a fresh measure to combat Ebola, Liberia on Wednesday suspended the activities of traditional societies, called Poro and Sande, that hold camps where female genital mutilation is practised and men are marked with knives or razor blade.

The societies are common in Liberia and traditional leaders were due to meet the government to express their concerns about the order, an official in the Information Ministry said after the announcement on state radio.

Medecins Sans Frontieres, a medical charity that has been at the forefront in the fight against Ebola in West Africa, warned of complacency in Liberia.

"Whilst progress has been made, it is of great concern to everyone at MSF that the population is now much less vigilant about Ebola and health promotion messages are being pushed aside," said MSF field communications coordinator Caitlin Ryan.

The rate of new cases has slowed in Liberia and health officials say the next phase of the fight against the virus will involve deploying teams of health workers to identify chains of infection. Flu cases continue to rise quickly - U-T San Diego

Flu infections in San Diego County continue to outpace last year’s rate, county health officials said Wednesday.

For this year’s influenza season, the number of lab-confirmed cases as of Saturday was 607. The figure for the same time last season was 359.

Likewise, patients seeking treatment for flu-like ailments accounted for 9 percent of all emergency-room visits at local hospitals during the week that ended Saturday — three times the percentage from the previous week.

There have been no flu-related deaths reported so far, according to the county’s Health and Human Services Agency.

Public-health experts said there’s still time to get vaccinated against the disease: Flu infections tend to intensify in January and February in this region, and the flu season usually runs into late March or early April. It usually takes two weeks after vaccination for the body to produce enough antibodies against the virus.

But epidemiologists also have acknowledged that because of a viral mutation, this year’s vaccine doesn’t offer full protection against the dominant strain of influenza that’s circulating. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has predicted that this flu season will be a severe one.

Other ways to reduce the risk of infection include thorough and frequent hand-washing, use of hand sanitizers and careful cleaning of commonly touched surfaces, county health officials advise. They also urge people to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth with their fingers, and to minimize the risk of contagion by staying home when sick.

For more information about local vaccination options, visit sdiz.org or call 211. People without health insurance may want to consider seeking a flu shot at one of the county’s immunization clinics.

  • Authorities are investigating

Beijing (CNN) -- At least 35 people were killed in a stampede at a New Year's celebration in Shanghai, China, state media reported.

The stampede happened around 11:35 p.m. Wednesday in a riverfront area known as the Bund, the state-run Xinhua news agency said. At least 42 people were injured, Xinhua reported.

Reports of the stampede appeared on Twitter, with posts describing a chaotic scene and rescue efforts.

Photos showed massive crowds packing a street near the river and emergency medical workers treating people on the ground.

Authorities are investigating the cause, Xinhua said.

The famous riverfront promenade is a popular spot for New Year's Eve festivities.

Just before midnight, officials canceled another New Year's celebration in front of Beijing's tallest skyscraper, citing safety concerns.

Even with the light show and official countdown called off, many revelers remained at the location and had their own countdown there.

CNN's Steven Jiang reported from Beijing. CNN's Catherine E. Shoichet wrote the story in Atlanta.

Question: How to avoid losing weight while doing yoga and pilates?

I have been doing yoga and pilates just to tone my muscles and increase flexibility and be a little healthier. I do not usually work out and I do about 30+ minutes since I m just starting out. I have noticed that now I have lost some weight and its is quite noticeable since my pants are now very baggy. I am very petite with a very fast metabolism and I lose weight very easily but I have trouble gaining weight or keeping it on. I would like to continue doing yoga and pilates but I m afraid if I do, I ll continue to lose weight which isn t my goal, and with my small frame it is very noticeable and will probably be unhealthy if I lose weight unnecessarily and too quickly.

Question: How to loose weight?

Every time I try to get in the mindset to loose weight, i workout with apps on my phone, go for runs, do push-ups and sit-ups etc. but after about a week I end up not caring as much about it anymore and kind of give up. I still want to loose weight and I've been trying for a few years. I'm 5'7" almost 16 y/o and weigh about 168lbs and I've been told a healthy weight for me would be 140lbs. I don't know what else I can do to keep myself in the mindset, but I really want to feel better about my body. I have moobs and a belly and I'm a little chubby. My doctor said I should loose weight which he then went on to say I should eat healthier and try to get 60 min of exercise in each day. This is hard for me because I live in Wisconsin where it's freezing half the year and it's too cold to really do anything outside. I really want to loose weight, feel better, and look better. Only serious comments and answers please. Thanks to anyone who gives me advice.

Look, I understand you. I was you few months ago. Please, believe me and take my advice. I've done it. I first tried it for 2 days and I felt great. And then I tried just a bit more and a bit more until I couldn't walk 1 minute anymore. Yes, you will loose weight and yes, you will feel better. But it will last so shortly and consequences will be awful. You will either loose weight but soon get more than you had on beginning OR you'll die. I tell you this because I tried it few times and I was skinny for maximally two weeks and then I was fat because I started binging. You can't just starve yourself for a while and then everything is ok and you are skinny. It is not possible. Please don't do it.

you should avoid heavy carbohydrate foods! You also need to double up your exercise routine! Exercise firms up as the carbs are NOT being deposited on your bod!

New Years Resolutions: How to Make Them to Stick - Huffington Post

As we move into the end of 2014, and are getting ready to turn the calendar to 2015, many of us are thinking of our New Year's resolutions. In the back of many of our minds' is the awareness of all of the years that we set the resolutions but abandoned them as well.

How do we set a resolution and maintain it? How do we set a resolution and yet at the same time, not feel bound by it but free to live within it?

Most people make resolutions at the New Year because it marks a new beginning. Anyone who has made a commitment towards anything can attest that resolutions do not have to be made just at the turn of the calendar. In fact, the start of any day can be the start of a new resolution.

Making and sustaining the resolution is actually more emotional work than anything else. The more that we are feeling bound by, handcuffed to or jailed by a resolution, the greater the possibility exists that we will break it. We will find it too hard, too impossible, too crazy or outside of our scope to accomplish. This is when resolutions go by the wayside.

The opposite of this is to make resolutions that are softer emotionally. When we feel a sense of freedom and ease within our resolutions, we have a much greater possibility of completing them and actually holding onto the resolution as a new way of being.

This is simple to understand, but how does one apply it? It is simpler than most of us realize. The only reason it is hard, is because many times we are so hard on ourselves that to be emotionally soft or gentle with our own being is foreign to us that it seems harder to take this path!

For example, one of the more common resolutions that people have is to lose weight or exercise regularly. Most start this process out very logically. They may hire a trainer, join a gym, and plan to work-out three days a week. They may purchase a scale and discipline themselves to lose a certain number of pounds a week. There is a force to this approach from the outside to fix something that is construed as wrong.

As you may know or have experienced yourselves, this approach lasts about six to eight weeks on average, and them most people fall off this resolution feeling destitute and discouraged.

What if the approach taken was completely different? While pushing against the body, and looking for a number on a scale to validate the progress, we create resistance in the body. What if we took a very unconventional approach to the idea of the weight loss resolution? The first step would be to accept where we are now. Then, the next step would be to go to the gym from a place of gaining vitality, increasing oxygenation, feeling better, sensing endorphins in the body and so on. With this new attitude, the resistance drops off. And within this newer more novel approach, we are more likely to make it to the gym and eat the salad as well as walk more often. The drop off from this type of resolution would be completely different.

Similarly, you can shift any resolution that you are creating simply by changing the attitude, the words, and the emotional impact on yourself.

Welcome to 2015! Hopefully with these words in mind, any resolutions you set for January 1st or really any day of the year can be made from a different space. With this in mind, the possibilities are really endless!

Happy New Year!

Researchers Unravel Another Cause Of Autism: Genes Expressed In The ... - Empire State Tribune

Up until now, various researches conducted to better explain autism have principally targeted the neurons and neuronal development in children. While, these studies have identified various genes which are involved in autism, they have been unsuccessful at fully comprehending the said disease. However there may be more factors at work as the researchers of the Stanford University explain.

“Until now, we’ve suspected that autism could be the result of defects in the neurons themselves. Now it appears that the oligodendrocytes can contribute to the problem by inhibiting neuronal signaling through poor cellular differentiation and myelination,” said Michael Snyder who is a professor in Genetics and the senior author of the study.

Researchers have tried a different approach at unravelling the disease. They turned to the human interactome which basically is protein interactions within the brain at molecular level. The researchers analysed the data about the human protein interactome and mapped out proteins into modules according to their functions and interactions. They found that most of the autism related genes were clustered in one module. What holds more interest is that, although, almost half of these genes were expressed throughout the brain, the remaining half were expressed in the corpus callosum. The corpus callosum is what bridges connections between the two hemispheres of the brain and is significantly reduced among autism patients.

They confirmed their tests on people with autism and saw that almost 38 genes within the module showed noteworthy mutations. Taking it one step further, they also analyzed frozen post-mortem samples of brain for confirmation.

“This is our first glimpse of autism’s underlying biological framework, and it implicates a cell type and region of the brain that have not been extensively studied in this disease,” said the researchers, commenting on the fact that focus should not be reserved just for neurons but other cell types involved in the brain such as the oligodendrocytes should be considered too.

Not all autism cases are the same because the disease is highly heterogeneous. But in cases, where the problem stems from the corpus callosum instead of neurons, researchers say that finding the correct cause and targeting it for treatment may provide better results.

Study concludes first Ebola victim likely infected playing in hollow tree with ... - Minneapolis Star Tribune

NEW YORK — A team of researchers think they may have pinpointed how the Ebola epidemic in West Africa started — with a small boy playing in a hollowed-out tree where infected bats lived.

The researchers explored an area in southeastern Guinea where 2-year-old Emile Ouamouno fell ill a year ago and died. Health officials believe he was the first case in the epidemic, which wasn't recognized until spring.

The Ebola virus wasn't found in the bats they tested so they weren't able to prove the source, the scientists reported in a study published Tuesday. But they believe the boy got Ebola from the furry, winged creatures that had lived in the hollow tree.

"As a scientist, I can say it's a possible scenario," said one of the study's authors, Fabian Leendertz of the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.

An outside expert said the researchers' work was thought-provoking.

"They didn't find smoking guns" but perhaps broadened the thinking about what sparked the epidemic, said Stephen Morse, a Columbia University infectious disease expert.

The Ebola epidemic is the worst in world history, blamed for killing nearly 8,000 people across West Africa this year, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The epidemic's exact origin has never been determined, but the virus is thought to spread to people from some sort of animal. Many experts have suspected some species of fruit bat, though some wonder if West Africa's epidemic started through another animal — like a chimpanzee or small antelope — that was perhaps infected by bats and then eaten by people.

The researchers saw no signs that Ebola had affected larger animals around the boy's small village of Meliandou. But they learned that a large colony of small, smelly bats with long tails lived in a hollow tree near the boy's home.

Villagers told the researchers that the tree caught fire in March, causing a "rain of bats" to pour out of the tree. The bats were destroyed or gone before the researchers arrived in mid-April — a bad break for the researchers, Leendertz said.

The researchers tested 169 bats, including fruit bats and a few from the species that lived in the tree. None tested positive for Ebola, but that doesn't disprove the hypothesis because experts think the virus may dwell in only a small minority of bats. The researchers are trying to collect more of the bats for testing.

The study was published Tuesday in EMBO Molecular Medicine.

Also on Tuesday, Liberia's government announced it will allow families to bury Ebola victims in a special plot of land instead of requiring that the bodies be cremated so as not to spread the virus.

Ciatta Bishop, head of Liberia's national Ebola burial team, said the government has secured 25 acres where Ebola victims can now be buried. More than 2,000 suspected Ebola victims have been cremated since the cremation decree was ordered at the height of the crisis in Liberia several months ago.

The corpses of Ebola victims are highly contagious, and many of those who washed or touched bodies before the burials contracted the disease.

The cremation decree is highly unpopular in Liberia, where funeral traditions are carefully followed and are considered a sacred obligation to the deceased.

Question: How to maintain my weight?

Congratulations! Eat little junk food, not too much.

Old Japanese saying, eat until you are 80% full.

Exercise, perhaps 3 times a week.

As long as you do these, you will be healthy. Your weight may fluctuate a few pounds, but you will still be healthy if you do these.

All I could think of is CCardio, treadmill but I also want to build muscle etc.

The campus will be empty (hopefully) and the gym will most likely be dead so it a better for me since i am really self conscious.

I'm about 5'4 170 lbs

C'mon, we aren't robots, I don't know why you think we can calculate exactly how our bodies are going to respond to diet and exercise. There is no answer for your question, you'll just have to wait and see.

Question: Help with my fitness?

Here's some Info about me:

Height: 6 feet, weigh: 215 lbs, Bmi: 29.2. I play hockey (being big is pretty good for it). I have hockey all days during the week, and have a tournament about every other weekend for hockey. So I am actually very active. And 15 y/o. I am a big, strong kid, but not necessarily fat. Someone once compared me to a defensive lineman in the nfl (big, strong, athletic). I do have some fat on me though, and I would like to lose some weight. So, I recently started tracking my health, where I track my calories. I set a goal of 2000 calories or less a day, and I've been hitting my mark for the most part. Also, I eat healthier than most teenage boys, 2/3 fruit a day, 1 vegetable.

Last year, I started the season kind of chubby and fat. But after a year of 2 days of hockey and 2 workouts a week, I really toned up and thinned out. And then over the summer, I had 3 workouts a week. I am proud of that but I wAnt to continue.

However, this year I'm not doing intense workouts like I was last year, but I still am very active. So I'm afraid I'm staying active, but not building muscle. I know this is a stupid question, but can your muscles get worse over time?

Is it ok that I am staying active but no working out/lifting weights? Am I eating good? Should I stick to my calorie plan? Any tips or advice to lose weight and to build muscle and get in better shape?

Thanks

21-24% body fat ideal for a female?

<span class="qna-sprite abDescExpandIcon"/>

I got my body fat percentage taken and its between this range. However, I work out so I thought It would be lower than this. Is this a good range to be in? I'm 5'1" around 116 lbs but based on my body fat you can see my heavy weight is from muscle mass, I lift weights regularly and im slim.

Question: Why cant I gain or lose weight?

Why cant I gain or lose weight?

<span class="qna-sprite abDescExpandIcon"/>

No matter how many calories I consume, the type of food I eat , or amount of activity I do, I cannot lose or gain weight and I have no idea why. It's so frustrating! I have never been lower than 117 pounds or higher than 123. I am 5'3 and want to lose 10 pounds , for months I've been trying to lose it but my body weight just does not budge! Why? I really don't get it! I thought I could just have a slow metabolism, but I don't gain weight either. I can eat and eat and eat all day for weeks and still only gain a pound at the most. Could this be a medical problem? Thanks
