Regression is what happens to us when we emotionally leave the present moment. We go from being clear-thinking adults to talking or acting, and sometimes even looking like children who are not getting their own way.
It makes you feel powerless and out of control, and we think we don't have any other choices. We think we know what others need, but can not even state what it is that we need.
As one regresses they fall back into an earlier time in life, usually childhood. When this happens we might even think others are being childish.
When you regress you slip back into past ways of perceiving, feeling, and thinking, and it makes you unable to see all of the choices available to you in the present.
Regression might come about because of fear or feeling unsafe, or forces greater than yourself are in control and you have no choice but to follow after someone else's moods or whims, feelings and directions.
Even anger can bring on some forms of regression. Rage is not a feeling, but a behavior or action that a person demonstrates when they are emotionally regressing. Rage is a behavior that we exhibit when we get stuck in feelings left over from unresolved situations and relationships in the past.
While anger is no more negative than any other feeling, such as joy or sadness. However, anger's darker side, is rage. Rage can fester in a person and without release, it can grow to the point where a person regresses into a childish state or they explodes into violence.
In fact if you are regressing you are abandoning your adult self.
Some people say they regress because they are afraid to face their feelings of sadness and anger, hurt and loneliness, or abandonment.
Is regression something brought on by wanting our own way all the time? Or being unaware that some things we feel are actually bad behavior patterns that send us into regressive behaviors?
What are your thoughts about regression and feelings, and behavior patterns?
