Barbecues, cookouts, swimming, days at the beach, sports and long hot days. Next thing you know it's been several hours of fun, and you're feeling a little flaky. Lightheaded, nautious, headachy, and just not right. It's probably not the flu, but heat exhaustion and you need to make sure you are protecting yourself and your family. When the Mercury is soaring, here is a quick list to make sure you stay safe.
1) Fluids, fluids and more fluids. Do NOT just drink when you are thirsty, but be drinking regular. A sign of thirst is a sign of dehydration.
2) A cool " time out zone"- Why not a few small breaks in the car with the AC on? Especially important with younger children, they can easily overheat and not realize it is happening. Take a 10 minute car ride, potty break, or just " chill out" time to make sure everyone is hydrated and not getting over heated.
3) Sun safety. It should go without saying but the sun is not our friend. Make sure you have sunblock and plenty of it. Re-apply every 2 hours, especially when in the water.
4) Snacks and meals. Keep it light, and don't bog your body down with trying to break down and process heavy large meals. Go for salads, lighter snacks, fresh fruits, juices, and even cold soups.
