DALLAS — Dallas County health officials have confirmed the first flu death of the 2014-2015 season.
While officials confirmed the patient who died was an adult, they didn't reveal an age or health history.
Zachary Thompson, director of Dallas County Health & Human Services, says there have been more than 500 positive flu reports this season.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area is ranked fifth in the nation for market areas with the most flu cases, according to a weekly index launched Tuesday by Walgreens. The index also lists Texas as second in flu activity.
During the 2013-2014 flu season, there were 55 adult deaths and three pediatric deaths related to the flu, according to Dallas County. The cases were among 9,700 patients who tested positive.
"The flu shot is the best form of protection against the flu virus," said Dr. Christopher Perkins, with Dallas County Health & Human Services, in October.
Dallas County says the flu season approximately runs from October to May and peaks between December and February.
The county is offering the vaccine at no cost to uninsured, low-income adults and children.

The adult vaccine is given in the adult immunization clinic on the first floor at the DCHHS building located at 2377 N. Stemmons Frwy. in Dallas. The children's vaccine is available at all DCHHS immunization clinics. Clinic hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments aren't necessary.
