I am lean.Eating calories or protein would help ?

I am very lean .For gaining weight and mass in muscles I went to GYM.But I have a doubt.
Does consuming whey protein help in making me bulk and powerfull ? Or should i consume more calories ?
Whenever I take calories like 500 in some food ..I feel half tired while workouts .Should I take it or not ?
