Dr. Henri Roca shared this info this morning on Facebook. I couldn't figure out how to link directly to the post so I copied the whole thing and will paste below. (I know he won't mind) Dr. Roca is well-seasoned a board certified family physician
Do Multivitamins Reduce Your Risk of Heart Attack or Stroke
According to a new study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, it would appear that, if you look at the population as a whole, taking a multivitamin a day does not decrease your chance of dying, of having a heart attack, or of having a stroke (JAMA Network | JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association | Multivitamins in the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in MenThe Physicians' Health Study II Randomized Controlled TrialMultivitamins in Prevention of CVD in Men
). Again we see that if you are reasonable healthy and have a reasonable diet taking more of anything is not necessarily better.
This study does not address the subset of the population that may have vitamin or mineral deficiencies, genetic inefficiencies, poor nutrition, chronic disease, significant heart disease, or the like. In these individuals there may be reason to either take a multivitamin or to take higher doses of specific vitamins and minerals. Your primary care provider can help you make this determination and can test you to see if you need more of a particular vitamin or mineral. If youd like help making that determination, go to Drhenriroca.com to sign up for a consultation.
Always remember that the best way to get your vitamins and minerals is through healthy, live, local food. Getting vitamins and minerals through a pill should only be utilized if there is clear need. In individuals who have low stomach acid either by poor functioning of the stomach or through taking medications that block stomach acid, absorption of vitamins and minerals through pills will be low. This also applies to those who have a rapid transit of food through the stomach.
