Is it true it's easier to notice weight gain on a small boned person?

I ask this because when I was 115 lbs people were saying how thin I was and when I gained like 30 lbs and mentioned I gained weight everyone said they didn't believe me and that I look the same. Now I lost 20 lbs and nobody even noticed. Does this have to do with being small boned or is it something else? And I doubt it's muscle mass, I never worked out before until now. Now I just do cardio, nothing too intense.
