Sadly, it seems that the health industry supports the drug industry in that instead of teaching us to be healthy and how to prevent illness they simply tell us which pill to take....and if that doesn't work they tell you to try another one. So, I have found that instead of going to doctors to try and lose weight, I read the information put out by fitness guru's like Charles Atlas, Jack LaLanne, Richard Simmons, etc...Joe Weider... and try to eat healthier and exercise more. If I want to be like Cory Everson or Denise Austen then I need to find out what they are doing and follow their example. In regards to the extra skin, I know that I will have a similar dilemma because I have a lot to lose. In the long run I would rather lose the weight quickly but I know I will have to continue to workout until the muscle builds up to replace the sagging skin. Just hang in there and don't give up and eventually the skin will firm up, that is what I believe.

My husband was at 350 lbs at his heaviest. When he reaches his ideal weight ---175 lbs--- he would probably have a lot of excess skin. Does this mean that there would be no means to lose all of those excess skin?

If the skin has been over stretched then he will likely be looking to have surgery for it to be removed. The thing is, he needs to give it time first for the natural elasticity in his skin to retract and settle before thinking about having excess skin removed. It can be quite unsightly if it is a lot of excess skin. Surgens would be more than happy to lop it off and bin in for him if that's what he wants.
I'm not sure about the procedure or of any difficulties with having it done, though.

Unfortunately the procedure is horrendous butchery (I've seen it done) - so I suggest not gaining that much weight where it would be required in the first place, LoL. The surgery is similar to a giant C-section. They cut you hip to hip - through the skin and fat layer underneath - right down to the body cavity. They then pull the skin down and cut a section off, then sew you back up. Not very aesthetically pleasing - having a DEEP scar across your entire torso. And I suspect the pain and recovery time would be awful.

My friend has this problem. He was clinically obese before we traveled Asia. We did lots of hiking (including Everest basecamp), he sweat a lot and he didn't have access to the pizza and booze he binged on at home - he lost 20kg in 6 months, the weight fell off, but now he has excess skin around his stomach and hips.

I sometimes honestly think that I would AESTHETICALLY rather be obese than skinny with all of the excess skin from losing hundreds of pounds...could you even imagine the self-conscious feelings from being skinny and everyone expecting your body to look fit and low in fat when in reality you know about all of the excess skin hanging off of your body?
Now, physically and aerobically, of course I would rather be skinny with excess skin rather than obese, but I see it as one of the most heartbreaking things in the world when someone has the resolve to defeat obesity and then are satirically rewarded with a bag of skin flapping in the wind.

Exercise will not tighten or improve excess skin after a weight loss. Slightly saggy skin is one thing and improving muscle size and tone can help with much of that. The folds of hanging skin that usually come from rapid weight loss will not be improved. The only way to get rid of it is through surgical removal.
In order to avoid much of that hanging skin, you have to lose weight slowly and exercise well the entire time. For severely obese people, there is almost no way to lose weight slowly enough to avoid the extra skin being left behind.

It makes no difference if you lose the weight slowly or quickly. You'll still end up with the same amount of excess skin.

If I had ended up in that situation, I would become a professional bodybuilder, eat steroids like candy, and build up enough muscle to fill the loose skin, LoL. 300 pounds, here I come!
All the best,
