I think how much you should run right now depends on your fitness goals, your current cardiovascular endurance, your weight, your height, etc. How much weight are you looking to drop? Have you already been a pretty active person going into this new gym membership? Everyone has different workouts tailored to their current physiques and endurance. But in general though, HIIT has gained much recognition for its cardiovascular benefits that can be achieved in such a short amount of time.

HIIT is an effective method of increasing aerobic capacity quickly to allow for long cardiovascular sessions where needed. Many distance runners participate in sprints / HIIT to allow them to run longer distances at a more intense rate.
