I find learning about different cultures and habits, and foods very worthwhile. When I was in the girl scouts ages ago we would study a culture and then make food that those people might be eating and talk about the differences in dress and health conditions. Most of the cultures we studied were from other countries. But we have different cultures of people in our own countries, like in Florida, there are several different cultures of people in that state.
The main one I am going to tell you about is the Seminole Indian Clans. There are 8 different clans in the Seminole Indian Tribe. They are the Panther and Bear, Deer and Bird, Wind and Bigtown, Snake and Otter.
Clan members are not suppose to marry within their own clan. The children inherit the clan of their mother. When the last female in a clan dies the clan is considered extinct. Example: the Alligator clan is extinct. The Panther clan is the largest clan in the Seminole Tribe today. Each clan is characterized by strength or courage, endurance and etc..
There are six reservations in Florida. The Fort Pierce and Tampa, Brighton and Big Cypress, Hollywood and Immokalee. The biggest moneymaker for the tribes comes from their casino's.
In the area in which you live would you share information about any culture of people that is different from your own? Any information that gives insight is welcome. I hope to keep this thread growing.
