How do you know if your workout is effective?

I workout at home and don't have any heart monitor to tell me how many calories I'm burning, so the way I judge if a workout is effective is by the effect it has on me. So if I'm out of breath and sweating like a pig, it's effective.



But is it correct? I'm sometimes not sure if I'm actually burning enough calories, even though I do sweat a lot and get out of breath. How do I know if I'm getting a good workout without anything to tell me how many calories I'm burning?
