Best sit up or abdominal work out?

If I'm short on time, what is the best thing to do for my abs? I don't plan on skipping or short changing the area every day, but when I am pressed for time I would still like to hit this area. Crunches and sit ups have never really seemed to be effective to me. Are planks best? Planks seem to work this area, but I think they are more effective at the end a good workout. Any thoughts?
