"Whey" is the left over liquid after making cheese. It's basically watered down milk beause the fat from the whole milk converted to cheese. As for the losing fat part...body fat is converted SUGAR. If you want to lose fat you need to eliminate as much sugar intake as possible. Basically, read your labels. If it has sugars, especially High Fructose Corn Syrup, listed in the first 5 ingredients SKIP IT.
