Lifting weights ads bulk to midsection?

I've read that muscle burns more calories then fat. I've also heard that lifting weights will build the muscles in the midsection and will ad bulk instead if losing the fat but if that's true then wouldn't you eventually begin to burn calories faster and get trimmer? Somebody please explain.
