Peppermint As A Healing Herb

I have been reading about the helpful benifits of peppermint oil. It is said that it can help people who suffer with IBS, because it contains menthol that can kill some bacteria that causes diarrhea, plus relieve muscle spasms. It will help with stomach pain and stop bloating, diminish gas problems and stops nausea, eases IBS symptoms and fights indigestions and helps prevent gallstones.

As most of us know herbs can have side affects like any helpful cure, there is always a downside for some people. Peppermint can cause heartburn, as it can relax the valve in your esophagus that controls the ability of food as it moves in and out. Peppermint can relax this valve so it opens more than it should and can let stomach acid back up into your esophagus. The reflex is heartburn.

If you choose to use peppermint it is better to use coated capsules of peppermint oil about 1 hour before each meal to prevent intestinal problems. The capsules usually are out of your stomach before they dissolve, which reduces the likelyhood of heartburn.

Different ways of using peppermint and safety warnings:

Pour boiling water over 1-2 tablespoons of peppermint tea leaves and steep for 5 minutes, to make a strong tea. Don't drink more than 4 cups per day.

Do not use peppermint remedies on children due to the menthol scent strength.

Menthol, an active ingredient in peppermint, can be fatal if swallowed in its pure form. Always dilute it before you take it. Check with your doctor before using peppermint as a herbal remedy.
