I always lose my butt

When I diet the only form of exercise I do is walking on the treadmill. While that burns my fat and tones my legs, my butt completely disappears. I have never been one to do any form of muscle building, but I currently have a boyfriend that loves my butt and I am starting to lose weight so, soon it will be gone if I don't build it up. I have heard squats are the best work out to do for that region. Is this true? How many should I do a day? What other workouts will help? Thank you for any help and information!
